A Crazy Composer

Film Review by Dean Duncan Jun 19, 2015

We start with Méliès doing a funny musical number at the keyboard. He falls asleep, the muses appear and dance decorously. So far, so bland. Is that on purpose, because he’s lying in wait for us? I wouldn’t put it past him. Now the scene changes to what appears to be some cheerfully infernal setting. And out come the cakewalkers! Next are the burlesque girls, and finally what appear to be some kind of Selenite/alien creatures. That one crazy step they do is very funny. This is completely unhinged, at the same time that it’s completely and beautifully organized. The three groups dance and are choreographed independently, and each component is in complete harmony with the others. An excellent score helps no end.
