Aguirre, the Wrath of God

Saw #AguirretheWrathofGod. Herzog’s a master self-promoter, & he keeps himself busy, & in the papers, …

… and he’s become some kind of mannerist, to the point, sometimes, of self-caricature, of near or practical irrelevance …

… But there’s always & ever this one prodigious film, by which he took & keeps his place among the world’s great masters of cinema.

#AguirretheWrathofGod. It’s all in that 4th shot. You’ll know it when you see it. The pace, the expanse, the patience. Even more, the payoff!! …

… Production & style & subject are one here. What he’s saying, how he’s saying it, that he’s saying it: ..

… each & all are symbols, indices, icons of ambition & folly, of Germany’s nightmare & the world’s travail …

… even the whole history of Conquest & subjugation, of rise & fall & failure & oblivion.

(#AguirretheWrathofGod. Incidentally, WH tried for this same alchemy in ’82, & the self-conscious strain of it all …

… ultimately made for something of a disaster. An interesting disaster though!)

#AguirretheWrathofGod. Forget the rumours—often true!—the My Best Fiend exploitation. Look at the performance, the physical fact of the man …

… Kinski!
