At the Hypnotist’s

Film Review by Dean Duncan Jun 1, 2015

Georges Méliès continues to loom large. Mlle. Guy’s not yet nearly the director he is. There’s a temptation to gender speculate, with regard to the man who is playing the lady, and is subjected not only to humiliations, but objectifications. You wouldn’t want to push it too much, given how scrambling and therefore semi-innocent these early productions were. Still, the mere presence of this female director makes you rethink the conventions, regardless of how or whether she is adhering, or intending.
