Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call—New Orleans

Film Review by Dean Duncan Jul 10, 2015

Okay, can we just have a moratorium on these kinds of films? Maybe I should just establish my own personal moratorium. Pretty vivid, and there’s instruction, I guess, about how a lot of people live. Plus, the iguanas. After all these awful, mannered, hair-plugged National Treasure-like films that he’s been appearing in, Nicolas Cage comes off as a real revelation. That walk! The whole character is there, and then the whole milieu that contains and oppresses and nearly destroys him. But do you remember that Oscar speech of his, for that other vile and rotten movie? It wasn’t the alcoholism either, or that poor souls are degraded by their errors and their impulses. Degraded is one thing. Degrading’s another. Moratorium!
