Elysium

Saw #Elysium. Somewhat garbled/cluttered in the particulars. More broadly, though, sci-fi doing its job …

… An apt analogy in which a stylization of S. African history opens up nicely to include & envelope the whole world.

#Elysium, or health care obstructionism as de facto economic apartheid, a sure emblem, whether the perpetrators know it or not …

… of plutocratic fascism. Now, now, I think. Plutocratic fascists are often very nice, & also very generous, according to their own lights …

… Having said that, call a spade a spade!

#Elysium. Bits of Robo-Cop & Tetsuo the Iron Man, a pinch of Melville’s “The Piazza,” & lots of Romero’s (superior) Land of the Dead

… For all that, though, this is far from mere pastiche. Key texts teach us, & inspire us too. Make that a fervent testimony, w’ footnotes.

#Elysium. I like it, but it has an important problem, that raises an important question. Could it be that bilious anger, rampant bad language …

… and a preoccupation w’ enacting the most gleefully violent mayhem keeps filmmakers from enacting convincing, authentic interactions …

… between their striving male protagonists, & any women or children that might be in the vicinity? Ditto the audience?
