Saw Jacques Feyder’s #FacesofChildren. Superb use of the spectacular Swiss setting. Kinda classical, kinda restrained …

… in approach, but really pulling out the stops when called for (as in the funeral & avalanche sequences) …

… A really great example of how wide ranging, agile, & very beautiful silent films can be.

#FacesofChildren. Wicked stepmother motif, w’ melodramatic extremes replaced by psychological subtlety …

… convincingly contradictory feelings, sympathy for all, & a tremendously sweet resolution. Pretty great!

#FacesofChildren. W’ regard to wicked stepmothers, see B. Bettelheim, 1983, 69. Children are often confused & angry …

… Folk & fairy tales can productively displace those feelings, offer therapeutic aid toward understanding & resolution …

… Here’s the real McCoy, the fairy tale dynamic, but rendered w’out stylization, & in a plausible, recognizable domestic setting.

#FacesofChildren. The child actors are amazing, to a world-beating, historic degree.
