How Monsieur Takes His Bath

Film Review by Dean Duncan Jun 1, 2015

Here we go again. Alice Guy is no Méliès, but significant exposure to her work, and to material from this period generally, reveals so many gradations and distinctions—this medium, at this time, is definitely big enough for the both of them. As was generally the case, this one doesn’t have quite enough shape, direction, pace to it. It does have an appealing, energetic excess in the way it piles on/tears off those clothing gags. Also, the naturalistic set contrasts nicely with a nearly exhausting, practically Méliès-like visual abundance.
