Into the West

Draft Review by Dean Duncan Jun 17, 2015

Charming, avoiding plain old sentimentality by the vivid desolation of the Dublin scenes, Byrne’s unrelenting character, the typed savagery of the typed bad cop, and by the squished mugs of the women and children, idea of Ma lingering and guarding the children is a touching one, the climax is wrenching, one wonders whether fantasy elements turn this into Miracle in Milan (which I didn’t care for either), where all the social critiques are undercut and even neutralized because in the end we just leave it to the agency of nonexistent powers; does it? no
