Les Enfants du Silence

Saw Claude Jutra’s #LesEnfantsduSilence. Lots has changed since ’62! Cochlear implants, for instance, or deaf people who want no part of them …

… There’s not a hint of any of that in this brave, affecting document. It’s practically perfect &, now, these many years later, seriously out of date.

#LesEnfantsduSilence. In terms of issues pertaining to the deaf community, then, this is historically important, & finally incomplete unto inadequacy …

… What’s left then? Well, there’s Jutra’s powerfully poetic, empathetic narration. There’s Brault’s miraculously intuitive, agile camera work …

… those heart-stopping freeze frames, & the surpassing beauty of those little children’s faces. Issues evolve, & that’s so important …

… But there’s always a certain something that transcends the moment. Isn’t there?
