The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Finally saw #TexasChainsawMassacre (’74). Okay. Is that atmospheric lighting, or is it just way too dark in/out there? …

… How do I put this? Some of the performances do not quite cohere w’ some of the other performances, or w’ themselves …

… Now that that’s out of the way: those things apart, or, frankly, those things included, I think that this is a masterpiece.

#TexasChainsawMassacre. Terrific camera work & sound design. Builds very nicely. That’s craft. Then there’s that apocalyptical ending …

… or Hooper/et al. somehow tapping into some mythological, even geological vein of aggression & enmity. Cry havoc! The last shot!

#TexasChainsawMassacre. You know how representational painting uses the medium’s materials to suggest real things outside the frame? …

… You know how Turner or Cezanne represent at the same time that they bring the medium’s materials to the foreground? …

… You know how abstract paintings are all medium, all form & paint? Well, this is an abstract film! Nix on plot & characterization. Forget taste …

… decorum, decency even. It’s all down to velocity & violence, all Artaudian Cruelty. Talk about Monsters from the Id!

#TexasChainsawMassacre. Should be mentioned that the film is hardly even violent, except by cutting, soundtrack, suggestion …

… Also, Hot Pants withstanding, the aggression really has nothing to do w’ sexuality. They’re simply trying to butcher everybody.
