The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

Film Review by Dean Duncan May 26, 2015

Be careful about ardently imprudent mis/alliances, young people, or you may one day find yourselves heartbroken on a devastatingly beautiful Christmas Eve at a French Esso station with the snow softly falling all around you.

Tweet Review:

Saw #UmbrellasofCherbourg. Some preposterous concoction, all that impossible colour coordination & relent/dishly pretty music …

… Or, this is how theatre works. Patently arranged & artificial, then paradoxically/powerfully leading us back to deeper feeling & truth …

… My disbelief suspended, absurd turns delicate, turns exquisite, turns shattering. Such echoes w’ that ending: “[His] soul swooned slowly …

… as he heard the snow falling faintly through the universe and faintly falling, like the descent of their last end …

… upon all the living and the dead.
