They Caught the Ferry

Film Review by Dean Duncan Jun 29, 2015

There’s some Danish documentary value here that is in some ways as interesting as the unexpected anomaly of Carl Theodor Dreyer directing an action picture. Look at them wait for every conveyance to get off the first ferry. Look at the housewife gas station attendant, and how they spill all of that gas! In terms of the action, Dreyer actually does it pretty well: the motorcycle shots are terrific, as well as the montage assembly. The conclusion, with the gauntly-made up reaper who drives that last offending vehicle, provides a bit of amusement and not much satisfaction. We appreciate the PSA component of the piece. But this isn’t Danish portent. It’s just kind of dumb.
