Slick Hare

Film Review by Dean Duncan Jul 13, 2015

More movie star cameos, in a picture set at a Hollywood restaurant.  Stokowski plugs the juke box. Frank Sinatra gets sucked into his own straw. The situation is that Humphrey Bogart wants an order of fried rabbit. Elmer the waiter becomes a toady to the stars—very unpleasant—while Bugs first tries to preserve his life, and then enters into the spirit of the competition. The Marx Bros. bit is good, especially when Elmer/Harpo starts switching as skillfully as Bugs. Cartoon Carmen Miranda quotes almost always play as insulting, or unnecessary. Maybe it’s because she kind of courted caricature herself. Bugs’ does a samba of his own, and beats Carmen at her own game. Terrific. Especially when he flips over and they animate his ears as if they were legs. The three pies sequence is great—a familiar pattern, freshly elaborated. “Why did you hit me in the face with a coconut custard pie with whipped cream?” Anyone can think of the custard. The whipped cream puts them, even in this middling production, over the edge and into the precincts of genius. The Lauren Bacall ending is regrettable, as is the unseemly wolfish behaviour that attends it.
