The Wabbit Who Came to Supper

Film Review by Dean Duncan Jul 13, 2015

Early Elmer—the evolution of these characters is really interesting. Yet we still, in the end, think of them as real. This is the Tom and Jerry, Million Dollar Cat situation. Elmer will receive an inheritance if he can manage not to hurt the rabbit. Why do people think they can go around blowing creatures’ heads off? The dying scene with its Oscar reference is not particularly funny. Myths and gags we like, not belaboured and profit-motivated intertextuality. Some painting! “C’mon, fat stuff.” Bang! One is always sympathetic to Bugs’ poor enemies, especially in his earlier iterations of his character. Note the collar. “Don’t go down there.  It’s dark.” A make-up room/boudoir! Nervy, and funny.
